Life After the Military – Now What?
Even though you might not fully appreciate it, there is definitely something to be said about structured life in the military. Very few people enjoy the kind of clear direction and fulfillment that you are probably familiar with if you’re here reading this article right now. Life in the military certainly isn’t all roses, but none the less it’s easy to get caught up in letting someone or something else run your life.
As a Soldier, you may have grown used to having a NCO tell you what and when you have to do something, or when and where your next mission is. And there’s nothing wrong with that – Not at all! But what you do need to realize is that life in the real world won’t have any direction at all, and as a result you must make your own.
As a Veteran, you may be struggling with civilian life. You spent so much time dreaming of it when you were on active duty, but now that you’re actually here it’s kind of daunting, isn’t it? You survived multiple deployments, you made it through the military in one piece, but now you have to face something even more gruesome – the US economy! It’s not just restricted to the US though; the global economy is the worst it’s been in a long time.
You Can’t Wait for the Future to Come to You
Regardless if you are an current or former Service Members, you do not want to make the mistake that thousands of soldiers have made before you – the same mistake that almost always leads to failure in transitioning into civilian life. What’s the mistake? The worst thing you can do coming out of the military is waiting for life to come to you. From the moment you take your first steps as a veteran it is YOU that is in charge of your future.
Even if you’re enjoying post-military benefits which may give you some direction as to your future, in the end they won’t be enough to achieve the lifestyle that you’ve dreamed of for yourself and your family…That will be your responsibility.
How Does Your Future Look?
The lesson to take away from all of this is that once you’re outside of the military and living a civilian life, the best way to succeed is to emulate the same direction you had inside the military. In other words, you need to think of the real world as any other deployment– unpredictable and dangerous. Except, this time you don’t have a squad behind you providing support. You’re lucky if you have a wife or husband to support you, but otherwise you’re on your own.
After all of this you may feel like civilian life is something to be scared of. If you were already nervous about making the transition into civilian life from the military, then please don’t take this article the wrong way. It is very, very possible for you to create the lifestyle of your dreams for yourself, you’re just going to need a little bit of direction to do so. Fortunately, that’s what this blog is all about! Stay tuned to this series and you’ll learn everything you need to know to take charge of your future and fight your way to success!
